How Escape Experience Pioneered Virtual Escape Rooms with Live Operatives

Escape Experience was the first escape room company to offer live virtual escape rooms with real operatives during COVID-19 in March 2020. Learn how our innovative Remote Avatar concept changed the industry — and why we still run virtual games weekly in 2026.

Escape Experience

We'll be your hands and feet. You bring your team online, the brains to use the tools we give you, and the will to win!

In March 2020, when COVID-19 forced businesses to close their doors, we refused to give up. Instead, we pioneered something that would change the escape room industry forever: the Remote Avatar Virtual Escape Room.

Innovation Born from Necessity

"The closure ended revenue from normal sources. We had to get creative fast or risk layoffs," explained owner Michael Rowland. Within weeks, our team developed a completely new way to experience escape rooms—one that would allow people to play from anywhere in the world.

The solution not only saved the business but allowed us to rehire over half of our staff, with each experience requiring approximately two employees—one of whom could even work remotely.

How It Works

Our innovative system combines cutting-edge technology to create an immersive remote experience:

  • 360-degree virtual tours let you explore the room in detail
  • Video conferencing via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or WebEx
  • On-site staff wearing camera-mounted vests with headsets and laser scanners
  • Real-time interaction as you direct your avatar through the room

Participants control their in-room avatar, directing them through tasks like "Try this code on that lock" or "Scan that and send it to me." The first-person view creates gameplay mechanics that feel natural and engaging.

Testing Across the Globe

Our first test brought together three brothers from Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Japan—all playing simultaneously. Nathan Akers commented: "Living so far apart, it's rare we do fun things together. This felt like we were actually there working together."

Global Reach

Manager Daniel Farris noted: "It's so cool watching people from around the globe interact together in our space." Players have joined us from Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Australia, and across the United States. We even extended our booking hours to accommodate different time zones!

Available Experiences

We launched with "Vaccine: Search for the Cure" in March 2020 and have expanded our virtual lineup to six full experiences, all hosted live from our Chattanooga location:

Perfect for Remote Teams

Virtual escape rooms have become a favorite for corporate team building, especially for distributed teams. Whether your team is scattered across the country or around the world, everyone can participate in the same thrilling escape room experience from the comfort of their home or office.

Pricing: Virtual escape rooms are $250 per room for up to 10 players. Every game is hosted live from our Chattanooga facility by a real operative and game master — no pre-recorded content, no automated systems. Contact us to plan your virtual event.

Virtual Escape Rooms in 2026

When the pandemic hit in 2020, hundreds of escape room companies scrambled to launch virtual offerings. Most of those programs have since shut down. The companies that built virtual as a stopgap — using screen-share puzzles, pre-recorded video, or simple point-and-click interfaces — found that customers didn't come back once in-person options returned.

Escape Experience is different. We built our virtual program to be a genuine, lasting experience — not a temporary workaround. Our live-hosted virtual escape rooms run weekly in 2026, serving remote teams, distributed companies, and groups who simply can't make it to Chattanooga in person. The reason is simple: when you have a real human operative physically inside the room, interacting with real props and real puzzles in real time, the experience holds up. It's not a video game. It's not a workaround. It's a real escape room, played remotely.

Why Escape Experience's Virtual Rooms Are Different

Not all virtual escape rooms are created equal. Here's what sets our live virtual experiences apart from the rest:

  • Live human operative physically inside the room — not a pre-recorded video feed. A real person is your hands and feet, responding to your directions in real time.
  • Real-time puzzles with actual physical props and mechanisms — real locks, real keys, real buttons, real hidden compartments. Nothing is simulated.
  • Live game master interaction — your game master watches on camera, provides hints, and guides the experience just like an in-person game.
  • Actual escape rooms, not digital recreations — you're playing in the same rooms that in-person guests play. Same puzzles. Same set pieces. Same surprises.
  • Works on any video platform — Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, WebEx. No special software to install.

This is not a point-and-click video game. This is not a pre-recorded experience. This is a live, hosted, real escape room that you happen to be playing remotely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do virtual escape rooms work?

Your team joins a video call (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, or WebEx). A live operative inside our escape room wears a camera vest, giving you a first-person view of the room. You direct them — "open that drawer," "try that code on the lock," "look behind the painting" — and they carry out your instructions in real time. A game master monitors the session and provides hints when needed. It's a real escape room played through a live video connection.

How many players can join a virtual escape room?

Each virtual escape room supports up to 10 players per room. For larger groups, our Virtual Multi-Game Team Building package splits your team across multiple rooms to compete head-to-head. Contact us for groups of any size.

What platform do you use for virtual escape rooms?

We work with whatever platform your team already uses — Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or WebEx. There's no special software to download. We send you a link, you join the call, and we handle the rest.

Are virtual escape rooms as fun as in-person?

They're a different experience, but our customers consistently rate them 5 stars. Because you're directing a live human through a real physical room — not clicking buttons on a screen — the excitement and teamwork feel genuine. Many corporate teams actually prefer virtual because it lets remote employees participate equally regardless of location. The experience has been refined over six years and thousands of games.
