Escape Experience

You're on a video call with your team. Someone shares their screen. Suddenly, you're all staring at the inside of a prison cell — and you have 60 minutes to break out. Welcome to the world of virtual escape rooms.

What Is a Virtual Escape Room?

A virtual escape room is a live, online puzzle-solving experience where participants work together remotely to solve challenges and "escape" within a time limit. Unlike video games or apps, virtual escape rooms feature real physical escape rooms operated by live human guides.

Think of it as having your own personal avatar inside an escape room while you and your team direct them via video call.

How Do Virtual Escape Rooms Work?

Here's the basic setup:

  1. Your team joins a video call — Zoom, Teams, Meet, or WebEx all work
  2. A live host is inside the real escape room — wearing a camera vest so you see their POV
  3. You direct the host — "Go to the bookshelf," "Open that drawer," "Try the code 7-4-2"
  4. The host acts as your hands — They physically interact with puzzles while you provide the brainpower
  5. Solve all puzzles before time runs out — Just like a regular escape room!

Types of Virtual Escape Rooms

Not all virtual escape rooms are the same. Here's what you'll find:

Live Avatar (What We Offer)

A real person is inside a real escape room with a camera. You direct them in real-time. This is the most immersive option because you're playing in an actual physical space with tangible puzzles.

Point-and-Click Games

Pre-recorded or illustrated rooms where you click to interact. These are more like video games than escape rooms — fine for solo play, but less dynamic for teams.

Hybrid Experiences

Some games combine video elements with digital puzzles sent to participants. These can work well but often feel disjointed.

Why Companies Love Virtual Escape Rooms for Team Building

Remote work isn't going away. And Zoom happy hours stopped being fun in 2020. Virtual escape rooms have become one of the most popular remote team building activities because they actually work:

  • Everyone participates. Unlike trivia where the same person answers everything, escape rooms require diverse skills.
  • It's genuinely fun. Your team will laugh, strategize, and celebrate together.
  • No travel required. Team members from any timezone can join.
  • Natural conversation. The game provides structure so there's no awkward silence.
  • Reveals team dynamics. You'll see who leads, who thinks creatively, and who stays calm under pressure.

What You Need to Play

The technology requirements are minimal:

  • A computer or tablet — Phone works but a larger screen is better
  • Stable internet connection — At least enough for a normal video call
  • Video conferencing software — We work with Zoom, Teams, Meet, and WebEx
  • Audio — Headphones with a mic work best to reduce echo

How Many People Can Play?

Most virtual escape rooms work best with 4-8 players. With fewer than 4, you might struggle to cover all the puzzles. With more than 8, it can get chaotic (though we've hosted corporate events with 20+ people split into teams competing against each other).

Tips for a Great Virtual Escape Room Experience

Before the Game

  • Test your video/audio setup 5 minutes early
  • Close unnecessary browser tabs and apps
  • Have a notepad ready for codes and clues

During the Game

  • Speak up! The host can only help if they hear you
  • Designate a note-taker to track codes
  • Don't be afraid to ask for hints

Virtual Escape Rooms at Escape Experience

  • C-Block Prison Break — Break out of a maximum-security prison (difficulty: moderate)
  • Search for the Cure — Find the vaccine in a high-tech lab (difficulty: challenging)
  • The Bunker — Stop a nuclear launch before time runs out (difficulty: challenging)

All games run 60 minutes and include a live host dedicated to your group.
