Things to Do in Chattanooga Over Thanksgiving Weekend (2026 Guide)
Family in town for the long weekend? Here is a day-by-day Thanksgiving weekend 2026 plan for Chattanooga: an escape room in a real vintage train car, the Lighted Boat Parade, Rock City's lights and what's open.

Escape Experience
Quick answer: Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. If the house is full and everyone needs to get out, Chattanooga has two easy family outings that only take an hour: a private escape room at our Downtown Riverfront venue on Broad Street, or Runaway Train, played inside a real vintage train car at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Games are $34.99 per person, 2 to 8 players per room. Pair it with the free Lighted Boat Parade on Black Friday and you have the weekend sorted.
Thanksgiving weekend runs on a strange schedule. There's one huge meal, a lot of sitting, and three more days of "so what should we do today?" Half the family wants to shop and half wants to nap. Somebody always suggests a movie nobody agrees on.
This guide covers what to do each day of the long weekend in Chattanooga, which of our five rooms fits which part of the family, and the holiday events worth pairing with your game. Spending the holiday in Nashville instead? See our Nashville Thanksgiving weekend guide.
Thanksgiving Weekend 2026 at a Glance
- Wednesday, Nov 25: Travel day. Downtown games starting after 9 PM qualify for the NIGHTOWL discount, a good way to shake off the drive.
- Thursday, Nov 26 (Thanksgiving): We're open with limited holiday hours at both venues, so check live times and book ahead. A game before the meal gets everyone out of the kitchen while the turkey roasts.
- Friday, Nov 27 (Black Friday): Play in the afternoon, then walk across the river for Reindeer on the Riverfront and the Lighted Boat Parade at Coolidge Park.
- Saturday, Nov 28: The best day for a big family game. Split between the Choo Choo and Broad Street if your group is large.
- Sunday, Nov 29: A slow brunch and the Tennessee Aquarium before everyone drives home.
Why an Escape Room Works for a Holiday Houseful
- Every age plays together. Puzzles need readers, searchers, organizers and people who notice the odd detail on the wall. Grandma is often the one who cracks the code.
- Nobody stares at a screen. For one hour the phones go in pockets and the whole family works on the same problem.
- It fits between meals. Sixty minutes in the room plus a few minutes for photos.
- It's indoors. Late November in Chattanooga can be cold and wet. The game happens either way.
Two Venues, Five Rooms
Runaway Train at the Chattanooga Choo Choo
Runaway Train is the one visiting relatives will talk about at next year's Thanksgiving. You're in witness protection on an armored train, and the whole game is played inside a real vintage rail car at the historic Choo Choo. Ages 10 and up. Read how we built it inside a real train car.
Getting there: meet at the Escape Experience kiosk under the dome inside the Terminal Station, about 15 minutes before your game. Your game master walks you out to the train car.
Downtown Riverfront: 224 Broad Street
- The Bunker: stop a Cold War missile launch beneath Raccoon Mountain. Rebuilt in 2026 with new tech and new puzzles. Ages 10 and up.
- C-Block Prison Break: break out before the guard's shift ends. Fast, energetic and a great first escape room.
- The Inheritance: find the fortune hidden in your late uncle's study. Our hardest room at 8.5 out of 10.
- Vaccine: Search for the Cure: our most atmospheric room. Tense, with no live actors and no jump scares. Ages 13 and up.
The Riverfront venue fits up to 32 players at once, so a big family can split into teams and compare escape times over dinner. Not sure the youngest are ready? Read Are Escape Rooms Good for Kids? first.
Friendsgiving in Chattanooga
Celebrating with friends instead of family? Friendsgiving usually lands on the two weekends before Thanksgiving: November 14–15 and November 21–22 this year. Skip the dishes and book a room before dinner. Riverport Grille shares a wall with our Broad Street venue and takes group reservations, so nobody has to drive between the game and the meal.
Family Who Can't Make the Trip?
Our live-hosted virtual escape rooms let relatives who couldn't travel play the same game as the family at the table, with a real game host over video. A virtual room is $250 for up to 10 players.
Build the Rest of Your Weekend
- Reindeer on the Riverfront and the Lighted Boat Parade (Fri, Nov 27): free, and at Coolidge Park this year while the south-shore riverfront parks are upgraded. Live reindeer and Santa photos in the afternoon, the 46th annual boat parade at 7 PM, and fireworks at about 8 PM. Bring blankets and walk over the Walnut Street Bridge.
- Rock City's Enchanted Garden of Lights: opens nightly November 13, 2026 and runs through December 31. A classic first holiday outing with out-of-town family.
- Tennessee Aquarium: two blocks from our Broad Street venue. Morning aquarium, afternoon escape room is an easy day with kids.
- Coffee and dinner: Trail Town Coffee is right across Broad Street, and Riverport Grille is next door.
- Getting around: the free CARTA electric shuttle links the Choo Choo and downtown, but it doesn't run on Thanksgiving Day.
