Winter Break & New Year's Eve in Nashville and Chattanooga (2026 Family Guide)

Kids home for two weeks and everyone getting cabin fever? Here is the 2026 winter break plan for Nashville and Chattanooga: school break dates, a private escape room downtown or in a real train car, New Year's Eve ideas, holiday lights and ways to save.

Escape Experience

Quick answer: Winter break 2026 starts Monday, December 21 for both Metro Nashville and Hamilton County schools, and New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday. If the kids are home, the college crowd is back and everyone is getting cabin fever, the easiest plan is a private escape room downtown: 501 Union Street in Nashville, 224 Broad Street in Chattanooga, or Runaway Train inside a real vintage rail car at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Games are $34.99 per person, 2 to 8 players per room, and Monday through Thursday games before 11 AM or after 9 PM are 15% off with EARLYBIRD or NIGHTOWL. The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of our busiest of the year, so book once you know your headcount.

Every family knows how winter break goes. The first two days feel like a vacation. By day four, the kids have watched everything, the college kid sleeps until noon, Grandma is asking what the plan is and you're one more "I'm bored" away from losing it.

This guide is for that moment. It covers what to do over the 2026 winter break in Nashville and Chattanooga, which of our rooms fits which part of the family, how to plan around Christmas and New Year's Eve, and the holiday events worth pairing with a game. We see the same questions every December, so we put the answers in one place.

Winter Break 2026 at a Glance

  • Mon, Dec 21 to Thu, Dec 24: Break begins. It's usually easier to get the time you want this week than the week after Christmas. Mornings and late evenings qualify for EARLYBIRD and NIGHTOWL.
  • Fri, Dec 25 (Christmas Day): Most of the city is closed. Holiday hours can be limited, so check live times on the booking page before you promise anyone a game.
  • Sat, Dec 26 to Sun, Dec 27: Gift-card weekend. Half the families in town just unwrapped an experience and want to use it. Book ahead.
  • Mon, Dec 28 to Wed, Dec 30: Peak week. Out-of-town relatives, college students and families all looking for something to do indoors.
  • Thu, Dec 31 (New Year's Eve): Afternoon and early-evening games are the sweet spot. Play, grab dinner, and still make your midnight plans.
  • Fri, Jan 1 (New Year's Day): One of our busiest days every year. Last New Year's Day, both cities were booked from late morning into the evening.

Metro Nashville Public Schools are out December 21 through 31, with the district fully closed December 23 to 25. Hamilton County Schools are out December 21 through January 1, and students return Wednesday, January 6, so Chattanooga families get a few extra days.

Why an Escape Room Works Over Winter Break

  • It's indoors. Late December in Tennessee can mean 60 degrees or freezing rain. The game happens either way.
  • Every age plays together. Puzzles need readers, searchers, organizers and people who notice odd details. Teens, parents and grandparents all have a job, and nobody needs to be fast or athletic.
  • The phones go away. For 60 minutes, the whole family works on the same problem instead of five different screens.
  • It's private. Book the whole room and you never share a game with strangers.
  • It uses up that gift card. If someone unwrapped an Escape Experience gift card, winter break is the perfect time to cash it in. Cards never expire, but school does start again.

Which Room Fits Your Crew?

Nashville: 501 Union Street, steps from Broadway

  • C-Block Prison Break: break out before the guard's shift ends. Fast, energetic and the best first escape room for kids 10 and up and relatives who've never tried one.
  • The Inheritance: find the fortune your late uncle hid in his study. Our hardest room at 8.5 out of 10, made for the family that fights over the Sunday crossword.
  • Vaccine: Search for the Cure: a dim farmhouse lab and a race to find the cure. Tense, with no live actors and no jump scares. Best for ages 13 and up.

Our Nashville venue fits up to 32 players at once, and the twin cells of C-Block Head-to-Head let two teams race in identical rooms on the same clock. Parents vs. kids. Cousins vs. cousins. Loser does the dishes. Here's how head-to-head works.

Chattanooga: two venues, five rooms

Runaway Train is the one visiting relatives will talk about at the next family reunion. You're in witness protection on an armored train, and the whole game happens inside a real vintage rail car at the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo. Meet at the Escape Experience kiosk under the dome inside the Terminal Station about 15 minutes before your game. Read how we built it inside a real train car.

Downtown at 224 Broad Street, our Riverfront venue has four more rooms: The Bunker (stop a Cold War missile launch, rebuilt in 2026), C-Block Prison Break, The Inheritance and Vaccine. It also fits up to 32 players at once, so a big family can split up and compare escape times over dinner.

New Year's Eve: Play Early, Celebrate Late

The best New Year's Eve escape room plan isn't a midnight game. It's an afternoon or early-evening one. You get the win (or the near miss) to talk about at dinner, and you're still free for the countdown. A few ways to do it:

  • Families with kids: play mid-afternoon, then have your own early countdown at home. Little ones are asleep by 9, and nobody misses anything.
  • Friend groups: book a 5 or 6 PM game, go to dinner downtown, then head to your party. In Nashville, the free Jack Daniel's New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash is back at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park with Little Big Town, The Red Clay Strays and HARDY. Gates open at 5:30 PM, and the Music Note drops at midnight.
  • Couples: make it a date. Our Nashville date night guide and Chattanooga date night guide have dinner ideas within walking distance.
  • Hosting a party? Send everyone through a room before the party starts and the icebreaker is done. Groups of 10 or more can tell our events team about the group and we'll map out rooms and start times.

New Year's Eve is a Thursday this year, so games before 11 AM or after 9 PM still qualify for EARLYBIRD and NIGHTOWL. A late-night game makes a pretty great lead-in to midnight.

Family Spread Across the Country?

Not everyone makes it home for the holidays. Our live-hosted virtual escape rooms put the family at the kitchen table on the same team as the cousins in Denver and the aunt in Atlanta, with a real game host guiding the hour over video. A virtual room is $250 for up to 10 players, and it's an easy way to bring a scattered family together between Christmas and New Year's.

Winter Break FAQs

Is Escape Experience open over winter break and Christmas?

Yes. All three venues (Nashville, Chattanooga Downtown Riverfront and the Chattanooga Choo Choo) are open through winter break, including the week between Christmas and New Year's. Hours can be limited on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so check live times on the booking page or call before you plan around a specific time.

When is winter break 2026 for Nashville and Chattanooga schools?

Metro Nashville Public Schools are out December 21 through December 31, 2026. Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga are out December 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and students return on January 6.

Can we do an escape room on New Year's Eve?

Yes. Afternoon and early-evening games on Thursday, December 31 are the most popular, because you can play, have dinner and still make your midnight plans. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day book up early, so reserve ahead.

How much does an escape room cost over the holidays?

Games are $34.99 per person for 60 minutes, with 2 to 8 players per room. A private room for up to 8 is about $280 before tax. Monday through Thursday games before 11 AM or after 9 PM are 15% off with the EARLYBIRD or NIGHTOWL promo code.

What's the best escape room for a family with teens and grandparents?

C-Block Prison Break and Runaway Train are great for mixed ages 10 and up. The Inheritance is our hardest room and suits puzzle-loving families. Vaccine is darker, so we recommend it for ages 13 and up.

How far ahead should we book for the week after Christmas?

Book as soon as you know your headcount. The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of our busiest of the year, and weekend afternoons and New Year's Day go first. The days before Christmas are usually easier to get.
